Macro Programming

In order to watch, for example, a DVD on a TV and have full surround sound 3 remotes may be required. Each device requires a number of buttons (commands) to be sent to the various devices. An advanced Universal Remote will allow for the press of one button to send all the commands in the correct sequence to the various devices, this is referred to as a "Macro", as such when the command sequence is created it effectively programmes into the remote. The most advanced remotes can download these "Macros" from a website such as the Harmony range by Logitech.

Programme command sequences

Programme command sequences are the steps taken to create Macros. In entry level devices this can be pointing each remote in turn at the Universal remote to learn the codes. In the advanced models this can as simple as choosing the correct model from a list provided on the vendors web site, which is then downloaded to the Universal Remote.

*

Code Lists

A code list is typically a web site listing all the known binary command codes used by manufacturers of Consumer Electronics, the need for these reference sites has diminished as the Universal Remotes have become more user friendly.

*

One-touch activity buttons

One-touch, activity-based control, turns on the right devices in the right order - getting users to their entertainment easier and faster than any other remote.

*

USB

A Universal Serial Bus is a serial bus standard to interface devices to a host computer. USB's are designed to allow many peripherals to be connected using a single standardized interface socket and to improve plug-and-play capabilities by allowing devices to be connected and disconnected without rebooting the computer.

*

Dedicated Help Button

On remotes with the dedicated help button feature there is a help button which takes users to an interactive self help screen.

*

Internet Programming

If a device has an internet programming option it means the user can connect the device to the internet and search the products they wish to programme it with. This saves a lot of time and manual input.

*

Tilt Sensor

In contrast, a full motion would use at least three axes and often additional sensors. One way to measure tilt angle is using an Accelerometer. Typical applications can be found in the industry and in game controllers.
